Alana Wina Trudi Living Borneo beadwork · wholesale

Kampung Manik · Samarinda · East Kalimantan

We believe Borneo beadwork belongs in contemporary life.

Alana Wina Trudi works with beading groups in Kampung Manik, Samarinda, to make contemporary bags, jewellery, décor, beaded table runners and small accessories in the visual language of Dayak beadwork. Most pieces begin with glass seed beads and cotton thread; the collection also includes hand-woven natural rattan. Wholesale only.

Why this work matters

A collection with a point of view — and a story your customers can understand.

Keep living craft visible

Many pieces draw on a visual language carried through generations of Dayak beadwork, translated into new objects for contemporary homes, wardrobes and shelves.

Make the hand visible

Glass seed beads are counted and threaded one at a time. The small variations are not a flaw; they are the mark of a piece made by people rather than printed by a machine.

Give your shelves a clear point of view

A distinct Borneo palette, geometry and hand-feel gives an independent assortment something recognisable to stand for — with a story that can travel from your product page to your shelf card.

The people and place behind the line

When a wholesale order lands, it becomes planned work in the Bead Village.

Kampung Manik is a Samarinda neighbourhood where women bead at home and in groups. The visual language is Dayak; the village brings Dayak, Banjar and Bugis neighbours into the same working landscape. AWT coordinates new, contemporary pieces with beading groups and confirms the details of each order directly.

Motifs & Meaning

How to describe beadwork with care

Borneo beadwork includes multiple communities and traditions. This page describes visual features and explains how Alana Wina Trudi distinguishes verified heritage attribution from contemporary compositions.

How we describe the work

Attribution needs evidence

Some forms and names have specific histories within particular communities. We identify a heritage motif, community or meaning only where it is supported by a recorded source or maker confirmation.

Where that confirmation is not available, products are presented as Contemporary Borneo or Contemporary decorative and described through visible features such as colour, form, material and finish.

Visual features

These examples show the kinds of shapes and repeated elements buyers may notice. They are visual descriptions, not universal cultural meanings.

Shot · 1:1 · Curving beadwork, close enough to count.

Visual family 01

Curving forms

Hooks, spirals and paired curves can fill a field or trace its edges. On the bead grid, their direction, scale and colour create movement across the composition.

Visual family 02

Bird-like forms

A long body, sweeping curve and contrasting centre can make a bird-like shape legible within a patterned field. Product descriptions stay with what is visible unless a specific attribution has been confirmed.

A yellow bird-like form holds the centre of the black field, echoed by green curls.

Macro detail of a mirrored red central figure framed by turquoise, white and yellow beadwork

Mirrored red curls form a central figure, held between white, turquoise and yellow companions.

Visual family 03

Figure-like forms

Mirrored shapes can suggest a central figure within the bead grid. The detail, symmetry and surrounding colour make each composition distinct.

Visual family 04

Borders and repeated elements

Diamonds, zigzags, hooks and rings build rhythm around a larger field. Repetition makes the edge legible while colour and proportion keep each piece individual.

Round beaded borders in red, white, turquoise and yellow around scrolling figures and small stars

Red, white, turquoise and yellow rings turn repeated curls and small stars into complete borders.

The palette

Colour in composition

Strong contrasts, repeated colours and dark grounds give the beadwork its graphic presence. Colour choices can vary between pieces, so product pages describe the colours shown rather than assigning a universal meaning.

Yellow

Black

Blue

Look for how the field, accent colours and border relate to one another; that visual structure is often more useful to a buyer than a claimed symbolic reading.

The shapes

Form, movement, sound

The triangle

Triangles can create direction, frame a central panel or repeat as a border. Their scale and orientation change the rhythm of the composition.

Mirror symmetry

Compositions often pair left and right around a centre line. That symmetry creates a clear, balanced visual structure without requiring a buyer to infer a cultural meaning.

Fringe and dangles

Fringe and dangles add movement, texture and a changing edge when the piece is handled or worn. Product pages note this construction where it is visible.

The material

The beads themselves

The current collection uses glass seed beads alongside materials such as cotton thread, wood, rattan and metal hardware where listed. Product pages identify only the materials confirmed for that product.

A note on cultural respect

Everything we sell is new work for contemporary homes and retail, made in Kampung Manik in collaboration with local beading groups. We do not sell ceremonial objects or antiques. Dayak includes multiple communities and traditions; we do not assign cultural meanings without confirmation from a recorded source or maker.

Our makers

Kampung Manik, the Bead Village

One neighbourhood in Samarinda, on the Mahakam River, where beadwork is part of daily life. This is where the pieces we sell are made and coordinated. Watch the film first; the hands, rhythm and conversation say more than a product description can.

Makers of Kampung Manik at work: threading, counting, talking. Filmed in the village, Samarinda, East Kalimantan. Privacy-enhanced embed: nothing loads from YouTube until you press play.

Samarinda sits on the Mahakam, the river that has long connected East Kalimantan’s communities. In one of its kampungs, Kampung Manik, literally the Bead Village, beadwork is not only a workshop trade; it is a neighbourhood practice. It happens at home and in shared working spaces, in the hours that make room for family life.

The visual language is Dayak: the motifs, colour logic and dense grounds belong to the beadwork of Borneo’s indigenous peoples. The village itself brings more than one community together. Dayak, Banjar and Bugis neighbours live along the same lanes, learn from one another and keep the work moving across generations.

The work is slower than photographs suggest. Beads go on one at a time. Patterns are counted, not printed; when a line is wrong, it is unpicked bead by bead. A wholesale order becomes planned work for a beading group, organised around the household and the requirements of the order.

Alana Wina Trudi is a founder-led company based in Samarinda. Orders are coordinated with the beading groups, and every piece is checked in Samarinda before it ships.
